We were refugees when Christian Science was presented to us at a time when we most needed it during the afterwar years in Germany. It was as "the light [that] shineth in darkness" (John 1: 5).
The impact of that wonderful book, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, began to make itself felt immediately. As I look back over all these years, its influence can be traced through my whole experience, guiding, uplifting, sustaining, healing.
When Science and Health first came into my hands, I hardly ever put it down: I read it in crowded buses on the way to school, I read it under my school desk in the classroom, I read it late at night under my bedcovers in a dormitory by the light of a torch. Its message that evil and matter are unreal, that God is a God of Love, was just too wonderful. As I read I was oblivious of what went on around me. The truths in that book meant everything to me, and I walked many miles to the nearest Christian Science Sunday School to learn more about this unusual religion.
