The first introduction to Christian Science in our family occurred on a memorable morning when my mother, who had been ill for several weeks, was in a coma. There had been four doctors in our home in consultation, and their decision was, "There is no hope for the recovery of your mother." They gave this verdict with much love and compassion to the family and my father, and then departed.
Our neighbor, a Christian Scientist, came in just then and said, "After hearing what the doctors had to say, I cannot stand by and see your mother go when I know that Christian Science can heal her." She spoke with such faith and courage. She said, "Would you give me permission to pray for your mother?" This was welcomed by all the family as one voice, "Oh, please do pray." The beautiful statements the neighbor gave us that morning brought the first ray of hope into the home. It was the sunlight of Truth penetrating the darkness of grief and fear. This woman's action and prayer were an outstanding example of love of one's neighbor as oneself.
When the family doctor returned a few hours later he said, "What has happened here? It is nothing short of a miracle that has taken place!" My mother was sitting up. She was wondering herself what had happened. She was a Bible student, and had always greatly loved her Bible, and would have accepted prayer at any time.
