Testimonies of Healing

In November 1976 a friend and I were...

From the May 1978 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In November 1976 a friend and I were visiting in a distant city. The morning we were to leave for home she waited at the hotel while I went to a garage to get my car. As I stepped onto the large freight elevator, the garage attendant, not noticing I had followed him, released the heavy, iron overhead gate. It came down on the top of my head. I was unconscious momentarily. The elevator had started to lift, throwing me over backward. As I struggled to get up I heard someone giving orders to call the rescue squad. I protested vigorously, assuring them I'd be all right if someone would help me up. A young woman pushed me down and ordered me to be still. I explained I was a Christian Scientist and looked to God for healing.

From the moment I hit the concrete, I had been mentally denying the reality of discord. God's presence was nearer and more powerful than any discordant belief that seemed to be happening on the human scene. Then I began repeating aloud the truth of man and his relationship to God. I declared that God is my Life. I live in Him. I move in Him. My very being is in Him. God is right here and He knows only good. If God doesn't know a mishap, I can't know it.

When the rescue squad arrived, I expressed my desire to rely on Christian Science. They hastily examined me and said a concussion was indicated. I refused to go to a hospital and was helped to my feet and escorted to the hotel. As I got into a chair in the lobby, I realized I also had a back injury.
