"Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!" (Ps. 107:21.) As a child, I had a mother devoted to Christian Science. All our problems were met through prayer. We didn't know the meaning of doctors or medicine in our home. After marrying and leaving home, I had many opportunities to prove the efficacy of Christian Science on my own.
My first child was born in Hawaii shortly after the beginning of World War II. Conditions were tense, blackouts were in effect. There was no way I could contact the Christian Science practitioner on the mainland who had been helping me; but omnipresent Mind is not limited by distance. I learned, months later, that the practitioner had recognized my need at precisely the right time. She supported the birth with prayer as I had engaged her to do. The result surprised the doctor, for instead of the cesarean operation he expected, the birth was normal.
A few nights later, another incident proved God's ever-presence. An infection had set in, and I had a high fever that alarmed the nurses who were attending me. No lights were permitted, but as I lay in the dark, many familiar passages from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy came to me. The one I remember most distinctly begins (p. 495), "When the illusion of sickness or sin tempts you, cling steadfastly to God and His idea." When the doctor arrived in the morning, he was smiling and said, "You had us worried last night, but you certainly pulled through remarkably." The following weeks of caring for the infant during wartime conditions, finally being evacuated from the island, and the ten-day voyage back to the mainland were all carried out in harmony. I will always be grateful for this because it proved so well that no matter where we are, or under what conditions, God is right there to meet our need.
