Presence of the Holy Ghost

From the July 1980 issue of The Christian Science Journal

One might say that mortal man is the shadow of the real man. When the light touches any shadow, the shadow vanishes. So unshadowed, perfect man begins to appear whenever thought turns to the light of Truth. Spiritual enlightenment replaces belief in matter, which has no real substance, with the understanding of man's perfect harmonious being.

This real man is brought into view with all his perfection through Love's dispelling of the Adam-dream man and through its revealing of the perfect man in his eternal being. Isn't this what has been called the descent of the Holy Ghost, as when the disciples were gathered together on that Day of Pentecost?See Acts 2; The Science of the eternal Christ—or, as they termed it, the Holy Ghost—brought them an understanding of the wonder of Christ Jesus' complete demonstration of life eternal. This understanding enabled them to go forward to preach, teach, and heal as their Master had instructed them to do. They must have seen through the shadow of life-and-death-in-matter that had deprived them of the personal presence of Jesus. They must have glimpsed the eternal, perfect sonship of man as God's indestructible reflection.

In the Glossary of Science and Health our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, defines "Holy Ghost": "Divine Science; the development of eternal Life, Truth, and Love," Science and Health, p. 588; and in her Message to The Mother Church for 1901 she writes: "Scholastic theology makes God manlike; Christian Science makes man Godlike. The trinity of the Godhead in Christian Science being Life, Truth, Love, constitutes the individuality of the infinite Person or divine intelligence called God." '01, p. 7;
