Unassailable joy

From the April 1981 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Sometimes even before outward healing comes in Christian Science, we feel a special joy. We can recognize this as a sign the healing has already been accomplished where it really matters—in thought—and we know all is well. But it goes deeper than happiness over the solution of a particular problem, as many sufferers have testified. It comes from the understanding that God loves us. To know this is our deepest need.

So we are wise to seek to know God better every day, rather than look to Him just for healing and supply, however important these may seem to us. For if we truly love God and work to gain an increasing understanding of Him through study of the Bible in its spiritual, scientific meaning, our daily needs will also be met. Thus, the prime question for us all becomes, How do we cultivate the happiness of knowing God?

The Bible tells us plainly, "He that keepeth the law, happy is he." Prov. 29:18. What is this law we must keep? There is only one law that is supremely important, and we know what it is from Christ Jesus' teachings and marvelous works: God's law of love. The Master was totally obedient to this law and taught others to love God and one another.
