"Blaze of Truth"

From the July 1981 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Light is always the solution to darkness. The light of Truth is the antidote for the darkness of ignorance or despair. This light is no pallid flicker, but an ever-burning torch—luminous, resplendent, and as immediately available as in the beginning when God said, "Let there be light." Gen. 1:3.

Spiritual understanding sometimes dawns on human consciousness as an awakening glow; at other times, as a distinct and unmistakable fire of Truth—to kindle hope, ignite courage, illuminate understanding. This light appeared to Moses as a burning bush, turning him aside from his self-imposed desert exile and causing him to heed God's call to active leadership. To the children of Israel, it was a flame in the darkness, showing the way and assuring them of God's protecting presence. To Elijah it appeared as fire from heaven, consuming matter and proving unmistakably to the Baal worshipers that Spirit was supreme.

On the road to Damascus, St. Paul was transformed by a great light from heaven, the illumination of the Christ. And the brilliant light that enveloped the Master at the time of the transfiguration—what a flame of Truth that was! It pierced the dark veil of death and revealed the eternality of individual identity through the appearance of Moses and Elias.
