Enlarging our concept of church

From the July 1981 issue of The Christian Science Journal

How can we most effectively support, pray for, a church activity?

I like to start by praying along the lines of the psalm, "Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law." Ps. 119:18. Are our eyes really open to what we are attempting to share with others through church activities? Christian Science is the most revolutionary, most compelling, most wonderful— and most divinely natural—Christian force in the world today. Mrs. Eddy defines it in Rudimental Divine Science this way: "As the law of God, the law of good, interpreting and demonstrating the divine Principle and rule of universal harmony." Rud., p. 1. She also says of it in The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, "This Science is a law of divine Mind, a persuasive animus, an unerring impetus, an ever-present help." Miscellany, p. 3.

People are seeking a church that is alive, relevant to everyday life, uplifting, healing. We have, manifested in the Church of Christ, Scientist, God's revelation of true Church. Just as God revealed to our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, the divine Principle of scientific healing, which she has fully stated in our textbook, Science and Health, so the true nature of Church is defined in the textbook, and the lines of its demonstration are set forth by her in the Manual of The Mother Church.
