Church—nourisher of growth . . .

From the July 1981 issue of The Christian Science Journal

. . . is what I woke up saying one morning. I thought it must have been from one of the fine articles that come to The Christian Science Publishing Society from all over the world. When this proved not to be the case, I began thinking about what this title was saying.

The first words that came were Christ Jesus' instruction to Simon Peter, "Feed my sheep." John 21:17. Then I recalled Jesus' earlier conversation with Peter when the apostle answered Jesus' query "Whom say ye that I am?" this way: "Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God." Jesus blessed him, gave him the spiritual name of Peter, and said, "Upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it." Matt. 16:15, 16, 18. The message seems unmistakable. Those who follow Jesus in building his church are to see that this church feeds his sheep.

What the world needs is Christ feeding. One's heart goes out to the people on earth who suffer physical malnutrition. A report from an American Presidential Commission on World Hunger notes that "chronic undernourishment" affects from 450 million to one billion persons: "They do not have what are regarded as the minimum requirements of nutrition for productive lives." The Christian Science Monitor, April 30, 1980.
