Poems

A prayer for prodigals

From the April 1982 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Moses, in sudden anger,
once killed an Egyptian.
Yet God appointed Moses to voice
divine commandments, including
"Thou shalt not kill."

David arranged for Bathsheba's
husband to be slain in battle.
Yet God anointed David to sing
holy songs, including,
"The Lord will lighten my darkness."

Paul gave his consent for
Stephen to be stoned.
Yet God ordained Paul to write
inspired epistles, including
"We are the children of God."

There are those today
who feel so far from the Father.
Having sinned against God and man,
these prodigals expect no welcome home.

But no child is lost to the Father.

As of old, the Christ within will rise
and lead the way, and all wanderers
will come home at last—
redeemed, reclaimed, reclothed.

God will write His truth in their hearts,
and each precious prodigal will announce
in commandments/songs/epistles
that man is the son of God!
