Easter in our hearts

From the April 1982 issue of The Christian Science Journal

After the dark night, there is the silent, golden dawn. After the cold winter, spring bursts out, never failing to arouse awe with its slender crocuses piercing frozen snows and its myriad voices rejoicing in the green. After the forest fire, fresh blades surge up. After the bombs, cities are rebuilt. After the heart's deep loss, renewed love begins. And after the crucifixion—even the world's darkest hour —Christ Jesus, unconquered by hate and death, walked out into the garden of the resurrection.

Easter gives the consummate, glorious evidence of renewal, and its message is echoed in a thousand million ways. Christian Science explains that what appears humanly to be renewal is merely a hint of the divine order—the creation of good, unfolding forever, shining through the human scene. Jesus' career disclosed his life to be the spiritual consciousness of God's unending good. This abiding divine consciousness of Jesus was evidenced in healing others and in the indestructibility of his own life. His consciousness of God's pure goodness thus partook of eternity. For his followers he prayed, "This is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent." John 17:3.

A resolve to seek God with all our heart becomes the natural response to the Easter message, for we see in its promise of eternal life the underlying good that awaits our complete surrender to divine Love. And indeed we realize that we would not be seeking God if His love had not already touched us.
