Meekness isn't tame submission. The true significance of this quality, its authority and healing power, are illumined by Christ Jesus' life. From him we can learn how vital this element is to spiritual growth and to the practice of Christian healing.
Even the circumstances of Jesus' birth point to the value of humble beginnings. For centuries the Hebrew prophets had looked for a Messiah, a king, whose coming would establish the reign of God. The splendor of royalty was absent in the stable where the Bethlehem babe was born, yet his birth began the most influential career ever known.
The obscurity of Jesus' birth safeguarded the infant from the murderous intent of King Herod. The jealous king would surely have discovered and killed a more obvious claimant to the Messiah-ship —one who had appeared with the regal trappings of power. Similarly, our budding spiritual aspirations, perhaps toward the public practice of Christian Science, need protection from the hostility of material-mindedness.
