Devotion to study: new spiritual growth

From the April 1982 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Mankind's greatest need is spiritual growth.

Christian Science teaches that the Word of Truth reveals the allness— wholeness—of God, divine Spirit, and man's true being as His spiritual idea. Man, the beloved idea of God, already perfect and whole, doesn't have to grow. It is the human consciousness that must progress into clearer apprehension of eternal Truth and man's already established completeness.

New spiritual growth appears as we strive for fuller understanding of the truth of being. One way we advance is through devoted study of the Word of God, Truth, found in the Bible and the writings of Mrs. Eddy. Our progress comes through transformation of thought from a material to a spiritual basis. Study that expands one's comprehension of spiritual existence helps this transformation to take place. Our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, states in Science and Health: "Man understands spiritual existence in proportion as his treasures of Truth and Love are enlarged. Mortals must gravitate Godward, their affections and aims grow spiritual,—they must near the broader interpretations of being, and gain some proper sense of the infinite,— in order that sin and mortality may be put off." Science and Health, p. 265.
