Ever since I was little I had a speech problem—like if I was going to say "car" it would come out "cow." I had problems with the sh sound and s, but r was the worst. Kids would sometimes make fun of me. The speech teacher at school gave me exercises to do at home. But sometimes I got discouraged because I thought I did not sound right. I said the exercises would never work; I just couldn't do them.
One day I went to the dentist to get my teeth cleaned. That was the first time I'd ever been to the dentist. I was eight and a half. (I'm nine now). The dentist noticed that my tongue could not reach the top of my mouth. He said to my mom, "Do you know your little boy cannot touch the roof of his mouth with his tongue or curl his tongue back? He will have to have an operation. He is partly tongue-tied."
Mom told him we were Christian Scientists and that Christian Science would heal me. After that I really started to do some Bible study. Here are some of the ideas I worked with:
