One afternoon close to the rush hour I was traveling in a streetcar. I remained seated from the first station to the last and was not paying any attention to my surroundings. Instead, I used the time for thorough reading of a Christian Science article. Then, all at once, I was deeply conscious of the omnipotence of divine Love. Suddenly I realized that the car had halted halfway between stops. A man had wormed his way into the packed streetcar and was now next to the driver. Completely beside himself, this man yelled and cursed, threatened to commit suicide, and hurled racial insults about nonwhites. This greatly disturbed the other passengers, one of whom told the man to keep his mouth shut or he would resort to other measures.
As all this was happening I was still filled with that wonderful sense of God's ever-present harmony. I looked the man straight in the eye and saw that he felt my glance. He smiled, fell silent, and sat down quietly. The driver shifted the car forward to continue our course, and the general tension dissolved perceptibly. I saw the man get up and extend his hand to the passenger he had insulted, saying, "I hope you'll forgive me. I didn't mean it that way." After a short hesitation, the hand was accepted. And when the man got out of the car, he waved in a friendly gesture to the driver. This happened at a time when there was much fear and uneasiness in our city over muggings that had occurred, and when many were of the opinion, "Mind your own business or you'll get a slap in the face."
I am so grateful that Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, had the courage and persistence to set down her discovery in writing the textbook, Science and Health, which gives us such a clear understanding of the Bible. The many blessings I've received include: an abundance of everything I've needed, healing of human relationship troubles, frequent instances of protection during many journeys, the healing of pneumonia and of all kinds of wounds, and virtually painless childbirth. I am very grateful too for the support Christian Science gave me in raising my daughter.
