Climbing, after Zacchaeus

Luke 19:1-10

From the October 1989 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Short in stature but long on pluck, Zacchaeus
Scurried on ahead and scampered up a sycamore
To see the Master.
Reading this I asked, "Am I as eagerly
Seeking a better view of Christ?"

This trumpeted an angel call for action, so with
Singleness of purpose prayerfully renewed,
I cast aside the stumbling block of apathy
And pruned away those unsubstantial creepers—
Self-righteousness and false attraction.
The shadows of remorse for past shortsighted goals were soon
Dispelled as deeds of lovingkindness
Spoke my heart's repentance. Now with wisdom, joy,
And gratitude supporting my pursuit
True progress was assured.

Undeferred by elbows of diversion,
Undisturbed by claims of obscuration,
My steps advanced expectantly
As I saw the light of Truth dawning, widening,
Lighting the way for my ascent. Impelled by Love
I placed my feet with confidence
On each new branch as holy inspiration grew
(The Christ-idea expanding in my thought)
Until those higher vantage points revealed
A glorious view of God's creation.

Then this benediction blessed my joy-filled day:
I found that I, just like Zacchaeus, had
An open invitation
To entertain the Christ.
