"Teach us to pray"

From the July 1989 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Who hasn't thought at one time or another, "I should pray more"?

A life of prayer. Perhaps we've thought that at some point we'd like to live a more prayer-filled life, to live more closely to our Father, to have our lives outlined more by the divine, unchanging reality of being and less by the jagged contours of human circumstances.

But there sometimes seem to be a million and one reasons not to pray more, enough reasons to postpone consistent daily prayer for a lifetime! Maybe we've got into the habit of thinking prayer is something to do mostly at times of greatest need. Maybe we think prayer is an intellectual activity—somewhat like having an assignment of writing a term paper and not knowing quite how to get started. Maybe we think of prayer as something "religious people" do, people like ministers or monks or Christian Science practitioners. Maybe we have a generally positive feeling about prayer, but we've simply got into a routine of not really praying very much.
