While vacationing in the West Indies, I had the following scuba diving experience in remote and challenging circumstances.
The islands I visited more or less encircle a protected area outside of which is open sea. Most of the boating and sailing take place within this protected area.
One day a friend, who is an experienced diver, and I were diving on the calm side of a small island. A strong breeze was blowing into the island on the opposite side. We did not know when we first went down that a strong tide was flowing exactly opposite to the wind and flowed around the island to the open sea. Also, I did not know that my air tank had mistakenly been filled with "bad air" (carbon monoxide gas mixed with the air).
