As a child raised in a home where my mother practiced Christian Science, I not only witnessed many Christian Science healings in our family but I also experienced them. Among the various healings we had—of burns, colds, the effects of accidents, mumps, and other diseases—I vividly recall one healing that occurred when I was in the fourth grade.
We had a lovely, old-fashioned bathtub with a high rim and claw feet. One evening after my bath, in attempting to climb out of the tub, I slipped and fell, dislocating my pubic bones. My parents telephoned my grandmother, a Christian Science practitioner, and asked her for treatment through prayer. The pain left almost immediately, and I spent a quiet night with Mother reading the weekly Bible Lesson (outlined in the Christian Science Quarterly) to me until I fell asleep. I woke up free—able to walk and play without any pain. There were obvious bruises, however, and the bones were still apparently not quite right, so my father, who is not a Christian Scientist, stated that unless I was fully healed soon, he would call a doctor.
I remember being surprised at my dad's comment. We'd always turned to Christian Science, and we'd always been healed. I had had so many healings I was confident God could do anything! My mother and grandmother continued to pray, and soon the bones moved back into place.
