When I was a child I longed to know the reason for my being, the meaning of life, and who and what God is. My parents were loving, active church members and, with our minister, attempted to answer my questions. I was not satisfied, however, and continued to investigate religions and philosophies until, in my late teens, discussions with a friend who was a Christian Scientist opened up the message of the Bible for me.
I eventually married this friend, and our marriage glowed with happiness because we relied on Christian Science to guide and support our mutual aspirations. Raising our four children was a joyous experience through reliance on Science, and we had many proofs of God's care and healing power. Two particular healings of our children were especially significant to me.
When our third baby was several weeks old, an irritating skin condition developed over her body. I called a Christian Science practitioner, who gave me loving, patient support and prayed for the child. I spent every possible moment during this period in prayer and study, constantly striving to know and understand God better and to see our child as God sees her—perfect, peaceful, and comfortable. I strove to obey these words from Job: "Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace."
