From the July 2000 issue of The Christian Science Journal

WE MAY NOT THINK MUCH about our environment from day to day, but it's certainly crucial to all of us. We want to live in clean physical surroundings and also in an atmosphere of thought that supports our wellbeing, an atmosphere free from harmful mental influences. Actually, our material surroundings have a direct connection to elements of thought.

The cover article of this month's Journal, "Spiritual activism and the environment," discusses the relationship of mental factors to the environment, and shows why prayer, including the cleaning up of pollution within our own consciousness, can have a significant impact on our surroundings—even on a global scale. The article "Love's stirring, purifying influence" points to the underlying cause, and the spiritual remedy, for the upheavals we may see in our immediate environment or in the world. Another article shows how an atmosphere of spiritual conviction contributed to physical healing. It's tremendously encouraging to see that what we hold in thought can have a transforming effect on what we see outwardly.

The Journal this month also contains a report on this year's Annual Meeting of The Mother Church, which focused on the leavening, uplifting influence of Christ, Truth, in human thought. We humbly trust that the insights in this report, and throughout the Journal, will do their part in refreshing and purifying the environment.
