Mary Baker Eddy—For the World

From the September 2003 issue of The Christian Science Journal

On Tuesday morning, Berlin participants had an opportunity to learn more about at programs given by The Mary Baker Eddy Library for the Betterment of Humanity. President of The Mother Church, introduced the panel of speakers. This account has been slightly condensed.

Achim Trapp: In a letter sent to the members of The Mother Church exactly a century ago as they gathered for their communion service, Mary Baker Eddy wrote, "My Beloved Brethren:—I have a secret to tell you and a question to ask. Do you know how much I love you and the nature of this love? No: then my sacred secret is incommunicable, and we live apart. But, yes: and this inmost something becomes articulate, and my book is not all you know of me. But your knowledge with its magnitude of meaning uncovers my life, even as your heart has discovered it." The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 133.

During the next two hours, we will be uncovering more of Mary Baker Eddy's life, learning about her love for us and for humanity. We'll be doing that with the help of three friends, two of whom are senior staff members of The Mary Baker Eddy Library for the Betterment of Humanity. Lesley Pitts is Manager of the Archives and Chet Manchester is the Library's Artistic Director. We are also very grateful to have with us today Dr. Annette Kreutziger-Herr, a professor at the University of Hannover and author of several books. Annette will be moderating the discussion and helping us to appreciate Mary Baker Eddy's life and legacy in an even more global aspect.
