Late one night I began experiencing symptoms similar to those described by a family member who had gone through a lengthy ordeal with a painful physical condition. I felt fearful but also had a conviction based on past experience that I could rely on spiritual means for healing. Ever since I can remember, I have found the practice of Christian Science sufficient for every need, including for good health.
One clear thought I had was that this problem had never truly been part of my family member’s experience and did not need to be part of mine. I drew this inspiration from a paragraph in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures where Mary Baker Eddy writes: “Heredity is not a law. The remote cause or belief of disease is not dangerous because of its priority and the connection of past mortal thoughts with present. The predisposing cause and the exciting cause are mental” (p. 178).
Since it was hard to think clearly or pray, I sang familiar hymns to myself. As I did, some simple but powerful ideas came to me. I held to the thought that my substance is spiritual, incapable of disease or dysfunction, and that this was a law of God I could safely rely on for healing. When it felt as though I wasn’t finding my freedom from the difficulty soon enough, however, I called a Christian Science practitioner for treatment.
