When I was first looking into Christian Science and testing what I was learning, I had incisive, compelling questions, which experienced Christian Scientists willingly tried to answer. This gave me encouragement and confidence to continue my journey in search of a better understanding of this Science. At first I was very skeptical, even unbelieving where some things were concerned, because they were not yet clear to me. I wondered, Is God All-in-all? Is God everywhere at the same time? How can that be? Other questions were: How can we prove that matter does not exist? Is everything that God made good? And why do God’s people get sick?
In the midst of the crossfire of these questions, I was at the same time battling issues with my physical health, including dysentery, frequent severe headaches, and constipation. But with the help of Christian Science practitioners I managed to uproot these unwelcome guests and find healing. I studied the Lord’s Prayer and its spiritual interpretation from the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy (see pp. 16–17), and “the scientific statement of being” (see p. 468). This study strengthened me, supported my spiritual understanding, and helped me recognize myself as a beloved child of God.
Improvements to my health occurred through Christian Science metaphysical treatment alone, and they inspired me in a very special way, persuading me to study this Science more and more. I began to learn the meaning of God’s omnipotence, omniscience, and omnipresence—how it is possible for God to govern everything, know everything, and fill all space. My questions were answered as I came to have a clearer understanding of the reality of being. And I found that walking in obedience to God’s law brings the certainty that we are immune to any type of illness, accident, or contagion, because then we understand that the love of our Father-Mother God is protection, and at the same time an always present and effective preventative.
