The Bible: Our Sufficient Guide

Christmas and handling the Herod-thought

From the December 2025 issue of The Christian Science Journal

We’re pleased to introduce this new series, intended to support our readers’ natural interest in and deep study of the Bible. Students of Christian Science turn to their textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, to explain the inspired Word of the Bible. And experience teaches that different individuals will often find different inspiration in the same Bible passage. So rather than trying to present a definitive interpretation of any given Bible verse or story, the articles in this series will describe the insights and inspiration individual authors have found in those stories and passages, along with how that inspiration and insight strengthened their own practice of Christian Science. If a particular Bible passage, story, or character has strengthened and inspired you, we invite you to consider contributing to this series as well.

At this time of year, Christians throughout the world celebrate the coming of the Prince of Peace. But rarely is it recognized how aggressively worldliness, or what could be called the Herod-thought, tried to prevent his appearing.
