Testimonies of Healing
I am very grateful for Christian Science, as it came to me when I was in great trouble and seemed to have no human friend to turn to. It seemed indeed the supreme test, for I must either love those who had despitefully used me and had said all manner of evil against me falsely, and receive more good, or cherish resentment and lose all the good I had gained.
Job said, "Oh that I knew where I might find him! that I might come even to his seat! "My earliest recollection is of this same desire manifesting itself in me—even as a child. In motherhood, after the passing on of my little daughter, when joy seemed to have passed out of my life, I found myself walking out at night alone under the stars, impelled by this same intense longing to find God; yet an impassable barrier seemed between us, although my whole being cried out that He was near and dear.
My attention was first drawn to Christian Science through the healing of a friend, and a copy of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, was immediately purchased; but it was not until a few years later that I became sufficiently interested to take up the study of this Science.
As I am a living witness to the power of Truth, I know that I owe to God and to our Leader a deep debt of gratitude, for through the knowledge of Christian Science as given to us in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, I was led out of darkness into light.
I have long desired to express my gratitude for Christian Science, and not being at present located where there is a society, I have not the privilege of voicing my thankfulness at the Wednesday evening testimony meetings. During the so-called epidemic of influenza, although my three children and I were seemingly attacked by the disease, with the help of a practitioner we came through safely.
The daughter of a clergyman and the wife of another, I was an agnostic for thirty years and lived the life of one. Toward the end of these years, troubles, sickness, and consequent heart searchings followed continuously and remorselessly, ending with the biggest trouble of my life.
From childhood J suffered from sick headaches so severely that often friends thought I might pass on. Christian Science healed me of that trouble.
Since childhood I had been sickly and was told my condition was due to heredity. When a young girl I was stricken with typhoid fever, which was followed by great weakness of the stomach and bowels, causing severe suffering.
I want to vouch for the statements of my sister regarding my healing. They are absolutely correct.
One afternoon in March, 1916, while visiting with a friend, conversation turned to Christian Science, and finally she offered me her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, which I gladly accepted, curious to know what was in it yet positive that I did not want it as a religion.
