Testimonies of Healing
About seven years ago I began to attend the Christian Science services with another member of my family who had been most wonderfully helped by treatment, and I soon found that Christian Science is much more than a mere physical healing agent. At that time I did not need physical healing, but was very unhappy because of inharmonious conditions in the home.
" Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. " These words of Jesus constitute the first quotation on page iii of Science and Health, the great textbook left by a pure and selfless woman, Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, a book which is bringing peace and healing to a suffering world.
Desire to express gratitude for many blessings received through Christian Science, together with the hope that in reading my experience others may be encouraged, impels me to send this testimony to the power of Truth to heal and save in times of accident and distress. While at work in the office where he was employed, a heavy storm window fell, striking my son on the hand and arm, the splintered glass lacerating the flesh and some of it remaining in the wounds.
At my husband's earnest solicitation I consented to try Christian Science treatment for sciatic rheumatism, but I was prejudiced against it and received no help. As time went on I grew worse, and finally resolved to go to another practitioner.
A few years ago I was an habitual drunkard, a confirmed cigarette smoker, and a gambler. I was taken to a Christian Science practitioner after being on a protracted siege of dissipation, and received an immediate healing of the liquor habit.
About twenty-one years ago Christian Science was first presented to me by loyal adherents of this healing truth. As religion seemed of little consequence to me at that time, I failed to realize the beauty and value of its teachings, until a few years later, when compelled to turn to a higher power than human sense afforded to overcome what seemed an inevitable life of unhappiness.
When I first asked for help in Christian Science I hoped only for physical healing and expected no more. About a year before this my attention had been directed to this teaching by the gift of a copy of its textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs.
In May, 1913, when I became interested in Christian Science, I was just about a physical and nervous wreck. At the age of fifteen years I had a serious illness, and for two years afterward the doctors thought I would not recover from what they called lung trouble.
At the age of about eighteen years I left a comfortable home for South Africa. I had received a good religious education, and during the eleven years that I was out there I had many opportunities for applying my religion to the temptations that crossed my path.
I can hardly find words to express my gratitude for the benefit derived from Christian Science. It was in 1910 that I first came in direct touch with the truth, and then through the continued illness of my wife I was led to purchase a copy of Science and Health.
