Testimonies of Healing

THE legislative committee hearing held in Boston during last winter, to compel the services of registered physicians for children, recalls an experience in our family where such physicians figured conspicuously, but where the cure itself was due to Christian Science. As the case has never been published in either of the Christian Science periodicals I take pleasure in giving this testimony in grateful acknowledgment of the fact that God forgives all our iniquities and heals all our diseases.

Four years ago Christian Science found me in a very despondent and discouraged condition, as I had suffered for almost five years with a most stubborn as well as complicated case of eye trouble. I underwent two operations, both of which proved unsuccessful, and had every known treatment and the best specialists San Francisco afforded.

It is now a little over one year since I turned to Christian Science and was healed instantly of a very bad case of stomach trouble. I had not been able to eat any cooked food for more than a year and a half, but lived on milk, fruit, and an uncooked bread made by a physician in New York.

I have felt for some time that I should acknowledge what Christian Science has done for me and my family. I had been a church member from childhood, and found many warm and true friends thereby, but when sickness and sorrow came to me I did not get what I most needed.

My first acquaintance with Christian Science was made while reading some chapters of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, to which I was persuaded partly by the advice of a friend and partly by my own curiosity to know something of this new subject.

" Thou hast turned for me my mourning into dancing: thou hast put off my sackcloth, and girded me with gladness; to the end that my glory may sing praise to thee, and not be silent. " This verse of the psalmist came to me as a direct command to open my lips and give thanks forever.

About seven years ago Christian Science found me in the bonds of sin and sickness. I, who knew that man was made in the spiritual image and likeness of God, had so stultified my claim to a spiritual birthright by wicked indulgences and grievous sickness that I had become wellnigh callous to my fate as regards the former, and almost without hope concerning the latter.

Nearly twelve years ago, in a time of dire need, Christian Science first came into my home, with healing in its wings. My mother had been an invalid for many years, most of the time a great sufferer, and shortly before the advent of Christian Science into our home she had listened to the ultimatum of her physicians, together with the concurrent opinion of several leading specialists, that her only hope lay in a surgical operation, the alternative being death.

Christian Science stands to-day in all its sweet dignity as an established fact—its adherents do not have to advertise themselves. This was not the case twenty years ago; then, a student returning from class instruction to his field of labor sometimes sought to make himself and his work known in various ways, one of these being to send out a letter or circular saying that the Christ-healing had been given again to the world in Christian Science, after having been seemingly lost for so long a time.

I am not a Christian Scientist, but I want to tell what Christian Science has done and is doing for me. Four years ago I was very ill with lung trouble—to all appearances dying.
