Testimonies of Healing
This year, 1958, Christian Scientists are rejoicing in the Fiftieth Anniversary of the founding by our revered Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, of our great newspaper, The Christian Science Monitor . It was in the same year that the most important event of my life took place: my husband and I began the study of Christian Science upon our return from our wedding trip.
After appreciating and enjoying the testimonies in our periodicals for a number of years, I have come to realize that the best way to say "Thank you" for them is to submit one of my own. A good friend gave us a year's subscription to the Christian Science Sentinel when our family moved to a new locality.
It was an important turning point in my life when I asked for help in Christian Science. I was suffering intense pain from an ear difficulty for which I had received no help from a specialist.
One of the definitions of "grateful," found in a dictionary, is "appreciative of benefits received. " When I stop to consider the many benefits that have come to me through the study and application of Christian Science, I know that it is time for me to express my gratitude in a written testimony.
In "No and Yes," Mary Baker Eddy writes ( p. 39 ): "Prayer can neither change God, nor bring His designs into mortal modes; but it can and does change our modes and our false sense of Life, Love, and Truth, uplifting us to Him.
I should like to tell of my first healing in Christian Science, not only because it has spiritual significance to me, but because it was the means of bringing my husband and me into Christian Science, which has been the source of innumerable blessings to us through the years. Some years ago, while searching for the healing of an abdominal disorder of long standing, I was led to Christian Science.
" A really grateful heart cannot remain silent. " This quotation from an article entitled "Gratitude Heals" which appeared in the Christian Science Sentinel of December 2, 1950, expresses my sincere feeling.
Having derived such direct benefit from reading the testimonies in the Christian Science periodicals, I wish to give mine, hoping that it will help others. I am especially grateful for the Christian Science organization which I attended during my last two years of college, because it was there that I first realized that Christian Science is not only a beautiful and comforting religion, but a practical one.
Christian Science was presented to me many years ago by a friend who invited me to a Wednesday evening testimony meeting in a Church of Christ, Scientist. I shall always be grateful that I accepted this invitation, because I knew immediately that I wanted to learn as much as I could about this religion.
Through the untiring help of a Christian Science practitioner I was healed of lung trouble, in spite of the opinion of several medical specialists who had said I could not possibly recover unless I underwent an operation. Afterward, in trying to make up for the time I had lost because of illness, I became more and more engrossed in my profession and felt overworked.
