Testimonies of Healing
Before I came into Christian Science, more than eleven years ago, I was a fully trained and registered medical nurse and had worked with medicine for over twenty-five years. When a patient whom I was nursing commenced to have Christian Science treatment my reaction was one of scorn and incredulity, for I felt that medical science had given its verdict in the case and that Christian Science could not possibly know more about a disease than did the doctors who had diagnosed it.
About two years ago my son was suddenly shipped to Korea as a Marine flyer without the usual leave in which to say good-by. It took some spiritual reasoning to get back my confidence and assurance and to overcome the shock and resistance I felt.
I write this testimony with the deepest humility, for I do not wish to be like the nine lepers that did not return to give thanks when healed by the Master. It is my privilege to be a member of The Mother Church, and my heart overflows with gratitude to our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, for giving to the world a better understanding of God and of the teachings of Christ Jesus.
In the fall of 1933, after I had given up all hope for myself, I had my first healing through Christian Science. For years I had suffered from tuberculosis of the lungs and throat, accompanied by heart trouble and extreme weakness.
One of the first Christian Science healings that came to my attention was that of an aunt, who had pellagra in its last stages, after the doctor had given her only three weeks to live. She was healed of the malady within a very short time and is alive and active today.
" Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled" ( Matt. 5:6 ).
This testimony of mine can give only a glimpse of the many blessings and healings which have come into my experience through the years, all of them entirely due to Christian Science. I have always been particularly glad that the truth is simple, though also profound.
I wish to express my gratitude for Christian Science and for a healing which I received recently of a growth on my body which had been there since early childhood. It came to me that unnatural growths do not belong to man, the image and likeness of Spirit, God.
Gratitude prompts me to give this expression of thanks for the many blessings I have received in Christian Science. About the time I began school I also entered the Christian Science Sunday School, where I remained until the age of twenty, when I joined the branch Church of Christ, Scientist, of which I am still a member.
Fifty years ago for a child to say that he was a Christian Scientist would bring about teasing and ridicule. The writer knows, having had such experiences.
