Testimonies of Healing
Very soon after coming to live in Florence, Italy, toward the end of 1908, 1 heard of Christian Science for the first time through a friend who had borrowed a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. " She told me of what she read in it, at first more or less scoffingly, and then, gradually, she spoke more seriously.
I have been a student of Christian Science for over fifteen years. I did not resort to it for healing, but having read the Journal and Sentinel, I was satisfied that I had found the truth, and I then purchased a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs.
The testimonies of others have been so great a help and encouragement to me that it seems an imperative duty as well as a great privilege for me to add my own. The physical healing through Christian Science has not been so great a factor in my personal experience, although I am grateful for many most decided and satisfactory results following the declaration of the truth when error seemed to cry out; but I wish to express my appreciation of and gratitude for many loving-kindnesses which have been tendered me by Scientists who were practically strangers, and for many other benefits received through Christian Science.
I cannot say that I am a Christian Scientist, as I am a member of another church. I feel, however, that for the sake of others I should bear testimony to what God has done for me through Christian Science treatment.
I feel that I owe it to others to tell what Christian Science has done for me. Most of the time for eight years I was a helpless creature, as I had rheumatism in its worst form.
[Translated from the German] In July, 1912, I was taken ill with what was pronounced a serious condition of the heart, also of the lungs' and kidneys. Then, through acquaintances, I heard of Christian Science and its wonderful results, so I applied to a practitioner for treatment, which continued for several weeks.
It is with a heart full of love to God, and gratitude for the blessings I have received through the teachings of Christian Science, that I write this testimony. It has been proven to me that God is good; that He is Love, and that His truth is indeed our "shield and buckler.
I have had much help in Christian Science since I was first treated in the summer of 1910. In December, 1911, I had a severe attack of acute lung trouble.
Many times before taking up the study of Christian Science, I wished for a basis, a right starting-point, in trying to work out my various problems, yet I never really believed that such a thing existed. I accepted the teaching of the church in which I held membership, so far as it went, but I was not taught anything about the Holy Spirit; or if so, it was to the effect that the Holy Spirit was manifested only for a certain time, place, and people, and that I was not of them.
I take great pleasure in writing a few words of thanks to God for the truth that has come to rescue us from all human suffering. Our little boy, when two years old, was ill with a fever.
