Paul writes: "If any man be in...

From the May 1913 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Paul writes: "If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new." When I think of the five years of suffering from a complete physical and nervous breakdown, said to have been caused by an attack of fever,—of the sleepless nights, weary days, constant headaches, intense pain, weakness, and extreme nervousness,—and contrast that condition with my present life of health, peace, and happiness, I do indeed feel that all things have become new for me.

When Christian Science was presented to me, I turned to it for the physical healing alone, knowing nothing whatever of its teaching. The first treatment brought instant relief from pain; but because the entire healing did not take place, fear kept me from being grateful. Though part of my healing has been slow, I can now thank God for it, as through the period of waiting I have gained a clearer understanding of God as Love, I have learned to be more patient, and I have found God's grace to be sufficient at all times. For the benefit of those who may think their healing is slow, let me say in the words of St. Paul, "Let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not."

With the healing of my physical ills also came healing from worry, fear, sensitiveness, self-condemnation, and self-consciousness. There is indeed so much for which I would return thanks, that I can give only a faint idea of the blessings which have come to me through the unfolding to my consciousness of the truth of Christian Science. Thankful as I am to God for these proofs of His omnipotence, I feel a yet deeper gratitude for the spiritual awakening which has revealed divine Love as ever present, and which has taught me that God does not send our diseases but instead heals them. My hope is that my life in the future may bear such fruit as will prove my gratitude.—
