Just five years ago, while on board a lake steamer, I fell down a flight of brass-bound stairs, which resulted in spinal and other internal injuries. As I had spent the greater part of five years in and out of hospitals and had had two serious abdominal operations, when this accident took place my fear of a doctor's diagnosis was so great that I refused to have medical attention, insisting that I wanted to die as I was. I had ceased to believe in God. The night of the accident I looked up in despair and said, "If there is a God, show me the way to Him." Christian Science was presented to me by a neighbor the following day. Surely, God answered quickly, as He always does when we are earnestly seeking Him.
After reading the chapter on Prayer in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, I realized what wrong concepts I had been entertaining of God. Absent treatment was lovingly given, and in three weeks I was not only healed of the results of this accident, but also of paralysis of the bowels, pronounced incurable by all the surgeons who had attended me, and of extreme nervousness. I have also been healed of rheumatism, influenza, and lack. A recent healing for which I am extremely grateful was of ptomaine poisoning. I seemed to be passing on. There were severe hemorrhages of the bowels. I was entirely healed in one week.
I am indeed grateful for the physical healings, but words fail to express my gratitude for the peace that has come to me and for the knowledge that "God is love." I am grateful to God, the Giver of all good, and to Christ Jesus, the Way-shower. The only way I can truly express my gratitude to Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, is to live Christian Science.
