DAILY FOLLOWING CHRIST

From the December 1927 issue of The Christian Science Journal

TO the Bible student it is illuminating to trace the beginnings of various aspects of Truth back to Moses' clear spiritual vision of God and of man's relationship to God. The Christ which was "before Abraham," the Christ which has always been present to make God comprehensible to humanity, whenever one has lent a listening ear, was Moses' guide and counselor. Every spiritually great leader the world has ever known has first been a follower himself—a humble follower of the Christ in daily life—before he became a leader of men.

The outstanding Christlike qualities which enabled Moses to hear God's voice and to carry out His commands were meekness, obedience, and courage: first, the meekness which recognizes that so-called mortal mind knows nothing of God, and therefore is not a leader; then obedience, even though God may lead right to the lapping edges of a Red Sea; next courage, to carry out the commandments of God day by day.

One of the early definite directions as to regularity in following Christ in the daily life is to be found in Exodus. It begins, "Now this is that which thou shalt offer upon the altar; two lambs of the first year day by day continually." Moses had to deal with a primitive people only beginning to be spiritually awakened, wandering about where they could find pasture for their flocks and herds. Through his spiritual perception and obedience in following the Christ, he had led them out of Egyptian bondage, and they were started on the journey to their own land. God had wrought for them a great deliverance. They knew it, but there was danger of their becoming absorbed in their material affairs and forgetting God.
