HOW often we hear people speak of economic problems, problems which mankind has always had to face, but which to-day seem present in a more pressing way! Economic difficulties arise from the false belief in a material creation, including material man, dependent for his well being on material things. As for all problems which confront humanity, Christian Science alone can present the solution of them, for it brings salvation from the evil held constantly before the gaze of a fearful world.
Christian Science reveals the fact that no problem is primarily material; therefore, the necessary solution is not to be found along material lines. Seen from the metaphysical standpoint, one's house is where one dwells in thought; and one governs his house or consciousness by rejecting or admitting the thoughts which knock at his mental door for entrance. From this it follows that, according to the teachings of Christian Science, there certainly are economic problems to be solved, in so far as the human consciousness has to be redeemed from its false beliefs of lack and limitation and fear, by showing mankind how to govern its mental house. To accomplish this, mankind has to awaken to the fact that, as it is written in the epistle to the Hebrews, "ye have in heaven a better and an enduring substance;" which knowledge caused Paul's followers to take joyfully the spoiling of their goods, that is, to give up their material beliefs, which are neither enduring nor satisfying.
What mankind needs above all else is not matter, but spiritual ideas, which constitute real riches, and which are always available, everywhere present in abundance, because they emanate from the ever present divine Mind. The following comforting message is given by our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy: "God gives you His spiritual ideas, and in turn, they give you daily supplies" (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 307). Is there, then, ever a shortage of spiritual ideas emanating from the inexhaustible source, the divine Mind? Or do they diminish by using them? No! Can there, as a consequence, ever in reality be a lack of daily supplies? No! Had not many of the notable characters in the Bible to face these same economic problems of lack and limitation? And did they not solve them satisfactorily, because they had faith enough in things unseen, in enduring substance, not to be deceived by the material senses with their false testimony?
