A few years ago, while living in the home of a Christian Scientist, I received a telegram from a friend of my parents which read, "Come, your father and mother seriously ill." Intense fear immediately overwhelmed me, but as I packed my bag I knew that I must overcome that fear in order to be of service when I reached home, about one hundred miles away.
Thinking I might find comfort in Christian Science I asked my friend if I might borrow her copy of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. Little did I realize the sacrifice she was making in parting with it. On my way to New York I read constantly, and on my arrival in that city a great burden seemed to be lifted from me. I still had over thirty miles to go. and each time fear tried to return, I drove it back with the truth that man is God's perfect child. I reached home during the night, and tidings of joy awaited me, for my mother met me at the door. She was not entirely well, but able to be out of bed; and my father, who at that time was slightly delirious, recovered rapidly.
After this I became more interested in Christian Science, and later began to study in earnest. My progress has seemed slow, but it has been steady; and this is a joy to me. Several cases of illness have been beautifully healed in my family, such as tonsillitis, constipation, measles, and others; and with each healing I find myself eager to learn more of my relationship to God. I can truly say I "hunger and thirst after righteousness." I am grateful for the light Mrs. Eddy has thrown on Christ Jesus' teachings, and grateful, too, for the love our practitioners reflect by standing ready to help us in times of discord; for the friend who lovingly lent me her textbook; and also for friends who have helpful, encouraging thoughts and comforting words in times of stress.—Nyack, New York.
