Christian Science has been my only physician for over eight years. When I found this truth I was sick both mentally and physically. It was presented to me at least twice before I was humble enough to listen; but the seed had been sown, for one Sunday morning I was looking through one of our daily papers and found a Christian Science lecture published there. I read it through, and as I read the truth began to dawn in my consciousness. It was what I had been searching for.
At this time I was suffering from at least three chronic ills which the doctors had told me would necessitate operations. I had gone through one operation and faithfully tried all their medicine and followed their advice, but the time had come when the medicine had no more effect upon me and I was growing worse. No wonder, as I soon learned in Christian Science! For how could drugs, the surgeon's knife, or any other material means still my troubled thoughts? I made haste to obtain the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and spent the next three or four weeks of my time literally devouring its contents. Then one day I realized that constipation, which had troubled me exceedingly from babyhood, hemorrhoids, badly disordered functioning of the internal organs, headaches which had been chronic for several years, and a very irritable disposition had disappeared. Where I had seen only gloom and doubt before me I now saw love and joy and peace, for I had indeed glimpsed the new heaven and new earth spoken of in the twenty-first chapter of Revelation. My thought was so filled with the truth about God and man's relationship to Him that there was no place for the lie; and this proved to me that it never had been real, but was simply "an illusion of material sense," as Mrs. Eddy tells us on page 71 of the textbook.
I know that these healings were permanent, for the ailments have never returned. My release from bondage came through a realization of my true being as a child of God, gained from my study of Science and Health. Since that time I have had many proofs of the healing power of Christian Science when conscientiously, faithfully, and understandingly applied. Sometimes these have come through my own work, and sometimes through the help of a practitioner; and here I want to express my gratitude for the loving help that has been so generously given me.
