I came into Christian Science as a...

From the October 1939 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I came into Christian Science as a natural result of seeking the truth. From the time I was a young child, I had many disappointments and much sorrow, and it seemed to me that there was very little in this world worth living for. However, I was convinced that there was a God whom we could know, and that if we did know God we could, through prayer, free ourselves from the bondage of this world.

I was told when still a child that we were not supposed to know all of God's plan, but just to accept what came, and believe it was God's will. I am thankful now that I did not accept this dictum as final. Instead, I began to seek Truth diligently, and the promise, "Seek, and ye shall find," has been fulfilled in my experience through Christian Science.

For some time I read Christian Science literature, and gained much joy and satisfaction from just knowing that I had found the truth. Then there came a time when three doctors failed to diagnose or heal a physical condition which attacked me suddenly and was very painful. One day, I went to see a Christian Science practitioner, told her my trouble, and asked her for treatment. Fifty-one days passed, days filled with joy, gratitude, and peace, such as I had never known. Each day I would watch for some change in the physical condition, but the pain continued. Finally, as I pondered the situation, I thought, "Well, I suppose I am not going to be healed, and I may not live, but one thing I am sure of, I will never give up Christian Science; it means too much to me now."
