In God's creation health is normal, even as are goodness, intelligence, and harmony. If it were not so, Christ Jesus could not have done his healing work, for he was not merely curing the sick who sought him, but revealing the completeness of man as God made him. It is only in mortal, material belief that sickness is accepted as natural and inevitable, the common lot of mankind. In God's universe it is nonexistent—unknown. In the disordered world, convulsed by hate and sensuality, thinking men are pleading for direction, begging to be shown the sure way out of mental, moral, and physical discord.
Many alluring routes to harmony have been tried by mankind from its earliest history, but they have led consistently to disillusionment and failure. Jesus, the Way-shower, speaking of the Christ, Truth, which he perfectly demonstrated, gave hope to perplexed humanity in his words, recorded by John, "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." The way which Jesus proclaimed is tried, straight, and sure. It leads without detour to health and holiness, yes, to eternal life. This plan is set forth in the Bible, but in order that it may be followed in practical, everyday living, it must be spiritually discerned.
The spiritual interpretation of the Scriptures has been given to the world by Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science. To her was revealed the divine Principle underlying Jesus' method of healing the ills of mankind. In an illuminating statement on page 400 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" she says, "Mortals obtain the harmony of health, only as they forsake discord, acknowledge the supremacy of divine Mind, and abandon their material beliefs." To drop material beliefs and acknowledge Mind's supremacy is to find the way from discord into harmony, from disease and impairment into the spiritual sense of health.
