MAN'S DESTINY

From the January 1942 issue of The Christian Science Journal

What a grand destiny faces each individual! As human thought awakens from drab materiality to the glorious prospects of spiritual being, our lives embrace a new-found joy. God created man in His own image to reflect the fullness of divine being. Man, in God's kingdom, is not moving toward perfection; he exists at the point of perpetual perfection, and is conscious of complete satisfaction, harmony, and joy under God's beneficent and eternal care. No material beliefs obstruct or interfere with the unfoldment of good in God's man.

Eternal life is ours, ours to know and demonstrate. The individual practice of Christian Science and the effort to live it consistently make this a present possibility; and progress in the fulfillment of this hope depends upon the measure of our spiritual effort. Mary Baker Eddy encouragingly tells us in her Message to The Mother Church for 1902 (p. 11):"Our heavenly Father never destined mortals who seek for a better country to wander on the shores of time disappointed travellers, tossed to and fro by adverse circumstances, inevitably subject to sin, disease, and death. Divine Love waits and pleads to save mankind—and awaits with warrant and welcome, grace and glory, the earth-weary and heavy-laden who find and point the path to heaven."

How beautiful is this spiritual actuality and promise of the fulfillment of good in our lives, in contrast with the earthly beliefs of frustration, discord, dismay, and disease! But the beliefs of the carnal mind are nothingness, and the only fact concerning man, as revealed in Christian Science, is the heavenly, satisfying reality of being. No evidence of poverty and want faces God's child, no frightening physical beliefs exist to obstruct his harmony, for God's idea perpetually reflects Him and experiences His provision of infinite goodness, substance, and joy.
