In order that men may live together amicably, certain laws are instituted, the enforcement of which is called government. Every clear-thinking citizen obeys these laws, for he knows that they are made for the benefit of all, even though they are variable and from time to time are changed according to the need.
The spiritual, real law, never varies. It is the law of God, good, who is all-powerful, omnipresent, omniactive, and omniscient. The law of God governs all real activity, health, harmony; for God, Truth, Life, Love, is the source of all intelligence, wisdom, and perfection. God, Spirit, the only creator, the divine Mind, created man in His image and likeness. Man, therefore, is wholly spiritual, reflecting and expressing the qualities of God. He obeys God's law and is governed by God. Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writes in "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" (p. 262): "God creates man perfect and eternal in His own image. Hence man is the image, idea, or likeness of perfection—an ideal which cannot fall from its inherent unity with divine Love, from its spotless purity and original perfection."
The master Christian, Christ Jesus, understood and obeyed the law of God. He was able to silence and surmount all material laws, heal the sick and the sinning, and raise the dead. By his works he demonstrated the power and availability of divine law. Mrs. Eddy, our revered Leader, by divine guidance, diligence, and selflessness was inspired to write the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." She bases her teachings on the Bible and interprets its spiritual meaning. She instructs the students of Christian Science how to apply the law of infinite Mind in the solving of all human problems.
