Throughout the ages, the veil has metaphorically represented mystery and concealment, obscuring vision, hiding something of value or beauty. With the coming of Christ Jesus, the Way-shower, the veil of ritualistic religion was withdrawn both in his daily life and in his healing ministry. When he made the supreme sacrifice in his overcoming of death and his demonstration of life eternal, we are told that "the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom."
Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writes in the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 597): "The martyrdom of Jesus was the culminating sin of Pharisaism. It rent the veil of the temple. It revealed the false foundations and superstructures of superficial religion, tore from bigotry and superstition their coverings, and opened the sepulchre with divine Science,— immortality and Love." The veil of materialism, hypocrisy, pride, was "rent in twain"; the mystery of death and the grave was shown to be unreal, powerless. A further manifestation of the allness of Spirit and of man's true being, one with Spirit, came with the ascension. The disciples, by reason of their as yet insufficiently spiritualized vision, were unable longer to behold their beloved Master. But they had so far learned from his teaching, and further by his works, that the Christ remains forever with men, and that with the understanding and utilization of the Christ-power, the healing works, as done by the Master, are possible and practical in all ages.
In the teachings of Christian Science there is no veil of mystery, and with the acceptance of the revelation of Truth, come countless proofs of healing from its application. Christian Science presents a demonstrable Christianity, without ritual, without ambiguity, giving to mankind a clear explication of the immutable law of God, as it is set forth in the Bible and elucidated in the Christian Science textbook. Herein are shown the infinity of God, Spirit, and the perfection of man, denned by Mrs. Eddy (Science and Health, p. 591) as "the compound idea of infinite Spirit; the spiritual image and likeness of God; the full representation of Mind." And because he is spiritually created, he must eternally express divine qualities.
