PREPARATIONS FOR A CHRISTIAN SCIENCE LECTURE

From the October 1942 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christian Scientists have received so many blessings from the study of the Bible in connection with the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, that they are eager to help others gain an understanding of practical Christianity. They especially rejoice that Mrs. Eddy instituted The Christian Science Board of Lectureship in order to share with the public her inspired revelation of the present-day practicability of Jesus' teachings, and to give correct information regarding Christian Science through a board of qualified speakers.

Throughout the world Christian Science churches, branches of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, sponsor one or more lectures each year. In this way they comply with the words of the prophet Isaiah: "Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God. ... Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain: and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it." The members realize that, as Mrs. Eddy writes in Science and Health (p. 61), "Every valley of sin must be exalted, and every mountain of selfishness be brought low, that the highway of our God may be prepared in Science."

It is not unusual for healings of serious difficulties to be accomplished at these lectures as the thought of listeners is turned away from material beliefs to the spiritual facts of being. The giving of a Christian Science lecture is of vital importance in a community, and should be so considered by those who sponsor it, in order that others may be made aware of the precious opportunity afforded them. As hosts, they themselves must be grateful for the spiritual truths revealed in Christian Science; they must be unselfish in taking thought for the stranger; they must know that no counterattraction can turn aside any who are ready for the message, and their thought must embrace all mankind in genuine lovingkindness in order to draw those who need comfort and enlightenment to the lecture. Jesus said, "And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me." Because a Christian Science lecture lifts thought to God, it is a power for good and blesses all receptive hearts within the radius of its influence. Through these lectures fear and disease are lessened, good will is increased, and business is stimulated.
