"The blessing of the Lord, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it" (Proverbs 10:22). For sixteen years, since I became interested in Christian Science, I have been proving the truth of this statement.
I was brought up in the orthodox religion, but never could get any joy out of its teaching. A dear friend introduced me to Christian Science at a time when I was living a very busy social life, had plenty of money, a good business, and a good home with my three daughters. I could not accept Christian Science then, but two years later, when we found ourselves almost without any means of existence, I gratefully accepted it, and found the Church of Christ, Scientist, to be truly "that institution, which affords proof of its utility and is found elevating the race, rousing the dormant understanding from material beliefs to the apprehension of spiritual ideas and the demonstration of divine Science, thereby casting out devils, or error, and healing the sick," as Mrs. Eddy defines "Church" on page 583 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." I found that I had been building on sand, and had to begin to build on the rock.
My first lesson was one of gaining humility, as it became necessary for me to find employment, and I did not like this; but I knew that I must press on willingly and gratefully. This I did. Later on, I was employed in one of our Christian Science Houses, and have always been grateful for the lessons learned there.
