ON WORDS

From the November 1942 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Let not the idle word be spoken—
The word that does not spring
From heart's sincerity;
Nor let one write a sentence
Bold beyond the standard of his proving.
Words spoken thoughtlessly are void,
Meaningless phrases that are born to die.
Words written carelessly are dead,
Carrying emptiness to souls of men.
Let there be heartbeats warm and true
Behind one's words;
Let there be the steady glow
Of careful thought to give them life.
Then will one's words become the harbingers of Soul,
Lifting and loving.
Then will the unity of man and word be known,
And harmony will be the honest and eternal thing
That God intended by His Word.
