No government that is not based upon divine law, upon love for God and man. can endure. If men are not governed by God, they are governed by fear, and this in time ceases even to represent government, but induces disorder and confusion. The purpose of all enlightened government is justice and freedom, whereby men develop and exercise their virtues and talents. In the framing and execution of law, they seek not to victimize innocent men or to make them afraid, but to ensure their well-being and protect them from abuses.
On page 225 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy writes, "The despotic tendencies, inherent in mortal mind and always germinating in new forms of tyranny, must be rooted out through the action of the divine Mind."
Today the failure of many whose duty it was to govern their own people righteously is seen to be coming to an inglorious close with revolt and disruption. And as a result, as a sequel to the defeat of evil forces masquerading as government, laws must be promulgated and machinery set up, not with the purpose of dominating, but in the interests of order and justice.
