THE LAW AND THE SONG

(Exodus 33:21, 22; 34:6)

From the November 1943 issue of The Christian Science Journal

There is a place beside Me: thou shalt stand
Upon a rock. Blessed assurance this
To all who stand in conscious unity
With God, their feet implanted on the rock—
Foundation sure—the ever-living Christ,
Through whom they see, in all eternity,
The unity, the perfect All-in-all
Of Love and its idea, God and man.

This blest at-one-ment, God-appointed, sure,
Untouched, unhindered by the storms of earth,
Remains for us today the secret place
Forever held within the law of Love.
Here, standing on the rock, the eternal truth
Of man's perfection as the son of God,
We are delivered from a mortal sense
Both for ourselves and for our brother man.

Within the "clift"—His hand outstretched to save—
We listen while He speaks; His voice brings peace—
Merciful and gracious, says our God,
Longsuffering and abundant, still He speaks,
In goodness and in truth, forevermore.
And so that voice still calls to us today:
Thou art My likeness, radiant and free,
Reflecting Me in mercy and in truth.
