REHABILITATION

From the November 1943 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Enlightened thought has brought a new peace and joy to those who study and practice the teaching of Christian Science. The source of all inspiration is God, and we begin to grow spiritually as we turn to God for a refuge and dwelling place. To the extent that our thought dwells on spiritual things, we are surrounded by tangible proof of the reality of Spirit. The nearer we approach divinity, the more conscious we become of the enveloping protection of divine Love. "Christian Science brings to the body the sunlight of Truth, which invigorates and purifies," writes Mary Baker Eddy on page 162 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures."

To witness the invigorating and purifying result in human experience of the sunlight of Christian Science, we must first set aside all prejudice and preconceived ideas of God and man, and bring into our experience an enlarged understanding of God as Love and of man as the radiant idea of this ever-present power. Man, the image and likeness of God, the idea of Spirit, expresses the irradiance of Spirit, and is embraced in the allness of Love.

Home is a state of consciousness. As we become more conscious of the truths of Christian Science, we bring into our experience an improved state of thought. Right thinking improves our immediate surroundings as hatred is replaced with love, criticism with appreciation, bickering with friendly acts of service. An unkind word has never brought forth one constructive idea; but a friendly act is long remembered for its loving consideration, and often forms the basis of a lasting friendship. Isaiah writes: "The work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever. And my people shall dwell in a peaceable habitation, and in sure dwellings, and in quiet resting places." To achieve this effect, to bring this joy to each home, requires the "work of righteousness," that is, patient devotion to right thinking, so establishing on earth the surety of peace.
