THE MASTER'S METAPHYSICS

From the July 1949 issue of The Christian Science Journal

CHRIST JESUS wrought the wonders of his ministry on a purely metaphysical basis. He looked beyond matter to divine Mind, God, to find cause, and he utilized the forces of Spirit—intelligence, integrity, love—to destroy the false mental causes of disease and limitation. Because he knew divine Love as the only cause, every step of his spiritual attainment was characterized by justice and mercy. Meekly he set forth his metaphysics in simple words, and with the resistless might of purity he proved the truths of his precepts by irrefutable healing works.

Christ Jesus recognized the mental nature of human woes. To the man at the pool of Bethesda he showed the relationship of disease to sin, although he sometimes pointed out that only a correction of belief is required for healing. Twice he spoke of death as a state of sleep, and he proved his point by awakening those in that state to normal human health.

The Master preached the gospel of the kingdom, the good news of the nearness of heaven, and declared that this divinely mental state, which Science reveals as the understanding of divine reality, is within man. His many parables of heaven taught mankind how to attain the realization of this mental perfection. Mary Baker Eddy, who discovered the Science that interprets his metaphysics, says of him (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p.313): "Jesus of Nazareth was the most scientific man that ever trod the globe. He plunged beneath the material surface of things, and found the spiritual cause." And later in the paragraph she adds (p. 314), "Our Master gained the solution of being, demonstrating the existence of but one Mind without a second or equal."
