The healing efficacy of the Christ, Truth, as taught in Christian Science has been demonstrated in our family many times. When I was six years old, I was healed in Christian Science of scarlet fever and of a severe rupture for which medical science had been unable to provide any permanent relief. That was over thirty years ago, and since then the simple truths that are contained in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, have met my family's every need.
Over two years ago I had an experience that demonstrated not only to me but to many others the healing and protective power of the truth taught in Christian Science. I was returning home after leaving my two little daughters at my parents' home in the country, where they were to spend the week end. The weather had suddenly turned stormy, and as I drove by the large airport adjacent to our city, I could hear the hum of the motors on an airplane coming in to land. The volume increased to such intensity that I glanced curiously out of the car window and had just a fleeting glimpse of a huge airplane swooping down upon me. It was a four-motor Constellation which had overshot the landing field. The plane, flying low over the road, demolished my car with its landing gear and then crashed in the adjoining field.
When I regained consciousness, I was in a car being driven to the nearest hospital. I can recall declaring to myself that God was taking care of me. As I was taken into the hospital, I asked the police officer who had escorted us in to call a certain practitioner and tell her what had taken place. This has meant a great deal to me, because although my mental faculties were so confused that I had to ask the hospital attendants what had happened, I was able to give the officer the name and address of the practitioner. Thus it was that I was having Christian Science treatment before being examined by the doctors in the emergency ward. In a half-hour my wife was allowed to take me home. It was reported that I had several skin abrasions and that three teeth had been broken off after piercing my lower lip. A representative of the hospital called the next day, saying it was imperative that I return and take antitetanus shots. However, the protective power of the truth was being manifested, for the practitioner was in the home at the time and assured the doctor who called that I was doing very well and would not require any protective shots. The truth that man lives, moves, and has his being in God was my protection.
